The brief

What happens when you open your home to people you’ve never met?

OpenOut started with a simple idea: bring interesting strangers together and give them a reason to spend a few hours together.

A host could open their home to around 15 guests and create an experience of their own: a food journey, a networking evening, a tarot reading, a sing-along led by a guitarist, or simply something they were passionate about. Guests paid to take part, showed up at a stranger’s home, and spent the evening with people they would probably never have met otherwise.

Choosing a city, then browsing experiences by hosts

Designed for serendipity

The platform deliberately avoided becoming another social network where people meet people they already know. It was designed around new connections.

The system managed who attended each experience while limiting familiar connections wherever possible, creating the unexpected encounters that made OpenOut special.

And it worked.

People met over food, music, conversation and shared interests. WhatsApp groups grew out of single evenings. Friendships formed, professional connections happened, and people came back for the next experience, often bringing new people into their lives.

Hosts made the product

The platform didn’t prescribe what an evening should be. The host was the creator.

A passionate home cook could curate a dinner. A guitarist could host a sing-along. Someone into tarot could run a reading. Someone else could simply gather interesting people for an evening of conversation.

The technology provided the framework. The people created the experience.

We didn't just build it

We used it.

Our team went to many OpenOut experiences ourselves, which gave us something analytics alone can’t: a firsthand understanding of what made the product work.

Some of the most memorable meals came from hosts who weren’t professional chefs at all. They simply loved cooking and wanted to share it with strangers. That was OpenOut at its best.

The bigger idea

OpenOut wasn’t really about events. It was about creating opportunities for people to expand their social world.

When technology so often makes it easier to stay within familiar circles, OpenOut used it to do the opposite.

A platform for strangers to become friends.
